Ed Henry
has been on air for 57 years and running, broadcasting Polish
Melodies from WLIS/WMRD since 1950, back when the station was
located on Main Street in Middletown. Radio has changed a lot
over the years, but his view of people has not; "People are
People, and I love people" he declares (Barbra Streisand would
love him!).
Ed's in
radio for the love of it, not for the money. He's supported his
wife and raised three children by working as a machinist at
Standard Knapp. At 77, he may have been retired for the past 16
years, but he's retired with an attitude - a great one!
"I'm
healthy, all I take is Centrum Silver, I gave up both cigarettes
and, later, cigars, and now I live by the watchword 'moderation',
as long as I have fun. I have lots of fun on the radio; the only
problem is, I want everyone to like me! But, a wise man once told
me that as long as I please half of the people, I'm doing great!
Not everyone is honest, except my wife - she's my biggest
critic! You know, three years ago, we had a big party to
celebrate my being on air for 50 years. All these people came,
paying $27.50 each! I couldn't believe it! This year, I
celebrated 50 years being married to the same woman, my beautiful
wife Jean Marie. I wanted to have another big party for that, too,
but she didn't want to! I was disappointed, although it would
have been pretty expensive, since I would have had to pay this
time! Instead, we just got together with the family; after all,
those are the people I love the most."
As you can
tell, Ed's got plenty of personality, making him a perfect WLIS/WMRD
host. His personality shines on air as he has fun with his
music and his listeners. After all, as he always says, "we're the
only radio show broadcast live and in color!" |
